What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low impact form of exercise allowing the whole body to lengthen and strengthen which will help you in everyday life, helping you move with more fluidity. Pilates stabilises your core body, which is your foundation so that you can move more efficiently while improving your posture, flexibility and mobility.
HOW DID PILATES BEGIN?
Pilates began in the early 20th century when Joseph Pilates, a German immigrant was a young man, he and his mother and father were coming to America from Germany. The ship they were on sank, but Joseph survived by swimming for hours until he was rescued. He had been a gymnast and acrobat in Germany, and he believed that this experience gave him the strength and endurance to survive the shipwreck.

After moving to America, Joseph opened a gym called "The Pilates Studio." He developed his own method of exercise that he called Contrology. Based on his experiences as an athlete, which included strengthening core muscles through stretching exercises, as well as using breath control to relax muscles during movement.
He believed that his methods could help people heal themselves from pain, injuries and illnesses.
He initially designed the exercises to help him overcome a spinal injury. His work was developed further by another teacher named Clara Pilates, who taught her husband's method in New York City until her death in 1967.
